How Pakistani Students Can Qualify for International Science Olympiads
Registration deadline: 31 May
International Science Olympiads are among the most prestigious academic competitions for school students. They bring together some of the strongest young students from around the world to compete in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science.
For students interested in STEM, Olympiads are more than just competitions. They build deep problem-solving skills, expose students to advanced concepts, and can become a strong part of university applications, especially for competitive STEM programs. Top universities value Olympiad participation because it shows that a student has gone beyond the normal school curriculum and challenged themselves at a national or international level. MIT Admissions, for example, lists International Science Olympiads among major STEM competitions where countries send their top students in each field.
Official pathway from Pakistan
The main official route for Science Olympiads in Pakistan is through the National Science Talent Contest (NSTC), run under the STEM Careers Programme. NSTC is meant to prepare Pakistani students for participation in International Olympiads in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. (stem.edu.pk)
The official pathways are:
| Subject | Pakistan contest | International Olympiad |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | NMTC — National Mathematics Talent Contest | IMO — International Mathematical Olympiad |
| Physics | NPTC — National Physics Talent Contest | IPhO — International Physics Olympiad |
| Chemistry | NCTC — National Chemistry Talent Contest | IChO — International Chemistry Olympiad |
| Biology | NBTC — National Biology Talent Contest | IBO — International Biology Olympiad |
How the process works
1. Register online
Students must register through the official NSTC/STEM website before the deadline. For this cycle, the registration deadline is 31 May.
Registration website:
https://stem.edu.pk/nstc/
2. Choose your subject
Students should apply according to their strongest subject:
- NMTC for Mathematics
- NPTC for Physics
- NCTC for Chemistry
- NBTC for Biology
3. Appear in the national screening test
After registration, students appear in a national screening test in their city or assigned test centre. This is the first selection stage.
The test is not like a normal school exam. It checks conceptual understanding, speed, accuracy, and problem-solving ability.
4. Attend training and selection camps
Students who perform well in the screening test are shortlisted for training and selection camps. NSTC’s official page explains that students are trained, tested, and further screened through later phases of the contest. (stem.edu.pk)
5. Represent Pakistan internationally
Final selected students become part of Pakistan’s official team and represent the country at the relevant International Olympiad.
Eligibility
According to the NSTC eligibility criteria, students are generally eligible if they:
- Have at least 60% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics in their last exam
- Are from Matric, FSc Part-I, O-Level, or A-Level Part-I
- Are not in FSc Part-II, A-Level Part-II, or university
- Are less than 20 years old on 30 June 2027
- Pay the non-refundable application processing fee of Rs. 1000 through KuickPay (stem.edu.pk)
O-Level and A-Level students are eligible, so Cambridge students should not assume this is only for Matric/FSc students.
Students should always check the official website for the latest eligibility details before applying.
Why students should apply
Many capable students in Pakistan never apply simply because they do not know these opportunities exist. This is especially common outside major cities and elite schools.
Even if a student does not make the final international team, the process can still be extremely valuable. It helps students improve their concepts, learn advanced problem-solving, meet other serious students, and discover academic opportunities they may not have known about before.
For high-achieving STEM students, Olympiad preparation can also strengthen university applications by showing academic curiosity, discipline, and ability beyond regular school exams.
How to prepare
The best first step is to register before the deadline. Many students delay applying because they think they are not ready, but the screening test is the entry point into the pathway.
For preparation, students should:
- Build strong school-level concepts first
- Solve NSTC sample papers and past-style problems
- Focus on understanding, not memorisation
- Practise advanced problem-solving regularly
- Join communities or initiatives that support Olympiad preparation
Subject-specific preparation tips
Mathematics — NMTC to IMO
Math Olympiad preparation is very different from normal school mathematics. Students should focus on algebra, number theory, geometry, combinatorics, and proof-writing.
Physics — NPTC to IPhO
Physics Olympiad preparation requires strong concepts and the ability to apply them to unfamiliar situations. Students should focus on mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics basics.
Chemistry — NCTC to IChO
Chemistry Olympiad preparation requires a strong understanding of concepts across physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry. The International Chemistry Olympiad tests students through both theoretical and laboratory-based chemistry skills, so students should build both problem-solving ability and practical understanding.
Biology — NBTC to IBO
Biology Olympiad preparation requires strong conceptual understanding, careful memory, and the ability to interpret unfamiliar biological information. Students should focus on cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, physiology, and data-based reasoning.
Useful preparation initiatives
Alongside the official NSTC route, there are student-led initiatives helping Pakistani students prepare.
PakSolve
A student-led initiative started by Pakistani Olympiad/MIT students, focused mainly on advanced Mathematics and Physics problem-solving.
PIT — Pakistan Informatics Training
A free student-led training initiative for students interested in competitive programming and the International Olympiad in Informatics.
What about Computer Science?
Computer Science follows a separate pathway.
For the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), the official route is through POI — Pakistan Olympiad in Informatics, not NSTC.
Students interested in IOI should look into POI and beginner competitive programming resources separately.
Final reminder
If you are interested in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology, apply before 31 May through the official NSTC website.
- NMTC → IMO
- NPTC → IPhO
- NCTC → IChO
- NBTC → IBO
Pakistan already sends students to compete internationally every year. More students just need to know that this pathway exists early enough to apply, prepare, and take the first step.
